DISCRIMINATION against Roman Catholics has to be removed if Britain is to become a truly tolerant society, one of East Anglia's senior MPs argued in the Commons yesterday
Suffolk Coastal MP John Gummer, who converted to the Catholic faith 13 years ago, presented a 10 Minute Rule Bill in the Commons which would end all statutory opposition to the Church and its adherents.
Mr Gummer said it was deeply offensive that the heir to the throne could not marry a Catholic without abandoning his right to succession. Read more

Why did'nt Mr Gummer present this 10 minute rule bill when he was a member of the Church of England and a member of its Synod?
The Sexual Orientation Regulations discriminate against all religions not just the Catholic Church. This argument is different to the above proposal and as a consequence is a distraction from his main argument.
All adoption agencies must be allowed the freedom to operate under the criteria which they find comfortable when deciding the future of the children in their charge.
As to the main thrust of the bill 'Biblical Truth' is paramount and one must ask if the Catholic Church conforms to the preaching of biblical truth.
As a final comment I, as a protestant whose ancestors supported George Fox and suffered persecution from Cromwell for our beliefs, applaud the Popes opposition to homosexual priests and civil partnerships.
I am reminded of a comment attributed to Mr Gummer in a conversation with another politician.
"Politics, politics, Sir you know nothing of politics until you have been involved in the politics of the Church of England."
Is Mr Gummer playing politics on behalf of the Catholic Church or is his motive founded purely on christian concerns about the idiosyncrasies of the laws of a Protestant country??
