THE Bishop of Durham is to retire, it has been announced this morning.
The Right Reverend Tom Wright, will step down on August 31.
Dr Wright, who will be 62 this autumn, is returning to the academic world, and will take up a new appointment as research professor of New Testament and Early Christianity at the University of St Andrews in Scotland.

Personally I think this is a good decision on his part. He has been a fantastic contributor on the academic front (though I wouldn't always have agreed with him), but I don't think it has sat well with the demands of 'bishopping'. So good for him, and good luck to him.
Surely the timing of this cannot be accidental. With the Global South and FCA now being must more direct about the standards demanded of those who wish to remain in communion, Wright would clearly be in a very difficult position had he remained as bishop. So he's got out before the Global South formally excommunicated him.
His departure must also be considered a vote of no confidence in the current Archbishop of Canterbury.
That's two very senior "evangelical" bishops lost to Rowan in the last year. Not good at all.
